What brand is the best?

Everybody have this question. Usually people don't just come out and ask, people sort of slide up and whisper the question out of the side of their mouth. " I'm buying a refrigerator, range, washing machine. Which is the best?"
There is a very simple answer to this very confusing question. You get what you pay for. There is no one magic manufacturer who is all good, making all other manufacturer, not so good. Many manufacturers make some high quality models and some stripped down, cheaply constructed versions designed to capture the buyer who is strictly price shopping.
To them, it is a sophisticated marketing technique. For you, it is very close to suicide. This technique is perfectly legal. The manufacturers are just capitalizing on the public's gullibility and greed, its desire and belief that it can get something almost for nothing.
Let me tell you 1'01ks, there is no free lunch. Cheap appliances are usually the most expensive things you can buy. Up front cost may be low, but this sucker advantage is more than made up for in repeated service calls, inefficient energy use and short appliance life. The less you pay for an appliance, the less, you can expect from it.
Millions of Americans can relate to the last paragraph because they have lived through the experience. Historically, appliances were all very soundly made products. America was famous for quality manufacturing and we grew up expecting a household appliance to have a service life of fifteen to twenty years.
Today many shoppers are finding that their new appliances are only lasting an average of five to seven years. My one word explanation for this short service life is that the), bought "Junk."
Why did this happen? Did a gang of criminals take over the .appliance industry, or what?
'Today, although there are more than twenty-seven major appliance brands on the American Market, ownership of the entire industry are controlled by just five companies. I have a chart telling you who own what in an Appendix at the end of the book
Another result of this policy was that the management of many of the remaining companies had to find new ways to inject profit into their companies. One technique was changing the parts and changing department, from a "necessary evil" into a profit center.
When a manufacturer turns to parts replacement as a major profit source, there is little or no incentive to improve product quality or longevity. In fact, if you are bottom line oriented, and business management has to be, it would seem the temptation would be to go the other way. I can not say that this is the reason for the apparent lowering of quality in many companies' products. But anyone in the appliance repair industry could tell you that many manufacturers continue to use components that have a high failure rate year after year. The parts are almost never improved and tile parts and service departments just keep getting busier. This might seem short term smart, but it is long term not advisable. Some appliance safety rules

Safety is really nothing more than a matter of common sense care. The rules of safety have been designed to prevent accidental injury.
There are two basic reasons for observing the rules of safety. The first and most important is to protect your own safety. If you are not familiar with your appliance, then you shouldn't be a do-it-yourselfer. Leave the job to someone else. You can replace the $50 you spend. You can even replace the entire appliance if need be. You can't replace an eye or a life.
Of secondary importance, but still important, is the safety of the appliance on which you are working. It doesn't do much good to save $30 or so in making the repair, only to waste $100 from damage you've done.
Quite often the two are interlinked. What protects you will often protect the appliance. This makes it doubly important to learn the rules of safety, and practice them until they become the natural way of working.

MORE ABOUT YOUR AIR CONDITIONING

The basic principles or air conditioning are misunderstood by most people, even by many in the field. Air conditioning is not simply just the process of cooling the air. It covers six different functions, defined below. All of these functions are required before the term "air Conditioning" can be properly applied to a system.
Air conditioning was not used until about 1920, and then it was used mostly in public places such as theaters, trains, and some department stores. This is when the general public became aware of the benefits of air conditioning.
Air conditioning is usually applied to the cooling effect of a system. However, air conditioning, by definition, requires that six functions take place. These six functions are cooling, heating, air circulation, air cleaning, humidification, and dehumidification. The person who is to estimate an air conditioning job must have, at least, a working knowledge of the functions and how they affect the overall total operation of the system. Some of.these functions are required during all modes of operation.
When the system is operating in the cooling mode, the processes involved are air circulation, air cleaning, cooling, and dehumidifying the air. When the system is in the heating mode, the processes are heating, circulation, cleaning, and humidifying the air. It should be obvious that air circulation is a very important aspect of the total system operation
There are basically two reasons for the use of an air conditioning system. The first is to improve some industrial or manufacturing process, and the second is to provide human comfort. The indoor conditions required are determined by the need and the desire of the occupants or the process. Thus, for human comfort applications, an understanding of the required body functions is fundamental to a proper understanding of air conditioning.
Human comfort depends on the rate at which the body loses heat. The human body is a heat machine that uses food as its fuel. The food that we cat contains the components carbon and hydrogen. The energy in these components is released by oxidation of the food. When we breathe in air, the oxygen that is taken from the air is necessary for the oxidation of the food. When we consider the products of combustion that occur in a gas flame, we know that -the products of combustion (oxidation) are carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H20). The medical profession terms this function as metabolism.
A natural function of the human body is to maintain itself at a constant temperature. The temperature that the mechanism attempts to maintain is 98.6°F. This temperature regulating mechanism is a very delicate part of the human body. The body always produces more heat than it needs; therefore, heat rejection is an ongoing process with the human body. The purpose of an air conditioning system is to help the body's system to regulate this heat loss. This theory applies to both the heating and cooling functions of the system. During the summertime the purpose of the air conditioning system is to increase the cooling rate of the body. During the wintertime its job is to decrease the rate of cooling.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HEATING SYSTEM

A gas burner burns natural gas or LP (liquefied petroleum) gas to heat water or air in a boiler or a furnace. When the thermostat calls for heat, it signals the burner control to open a valve, sending gas into the ports in the burners, where it mixes with air and is ignited by a pilot light or electronic ignition. Burning gas heats the heat exchanger (the chamber containing air or water); combustion gases escape through a vent pipe. A draft diverter hood on the vent pipe (or built into the outlet of a furnace) controls draft and stops air currents from backing down and blowing out the pilot light. An automatic vent damper may close to prevent heat loss after the flame goes out, but many utilities don't permit this it can fail to open. A thermocouple causes the gas to be shut off if the pilot light goes out

Energy efficiency.
If you add to your house's insulation, its heating needs will be reduced and the burner maybe too large for the house. You may be able to have the burner's orifice size reduced up to 20 percent. If you convert an oil burner to a gas burner, make sure it's a power burner-it uses less gas. To allow an efficient flow of gases, keep the burners and air shutters free of dust and dirt.

Maintenance. Annually, before winter, have a heating contractor or the utility company inspects the burner. They have instruments to test combustion efficiency, to properly adjust the air and gas supply, and to clean the fuel passages and vent pipe. To clean the burner, turn off its main gas valve and the electric power. Remove a panel to the combustion chamber. Slide the burners out; they may have to be unbolted or twisted and lifted out. If the pilot and thermocouple are attached to a burner, remove them. Clean debris and rust from the burners and combustion chamber with a stiff brush-, vacuum them, and the air shutters, using a crevice tool. Un- plugs ports and spuds carefully with a toothpick.

CAUTION:
Make sure the burner has an adequate air supply. Don't relight the pilot light or make any repairs if there's a strong gas odor. Close the main valve; call the gas company from a neighbor's house. Don't operate any electrical switches. Although several types of burners exist for the combustion of oil, the gun-type high-pressure oil burner is the most common. When a thermostat calls for heat, a pump in the burner housing sends oil under high pressure to the nozzle, where it is sprayed in a fine mist, mixed with air from a blower, and ignited by an electric spark.

The ignition system contains a transformer, which changes the house current into a high-voltage spark that jumps across electrodes by the path of the oil spray after the gases heat the heat exchanger (which contains air or water), they flow through the stack into a separate flue in the chimney. A draft regulator mounted on the stack controls the velocity of this flow, called draft.

Maintenance.
Before each heating season, have your burner and other related parts (such as the boiler or furnace) checked, cleaned, and adjusted by your service person. Consider taking out a service contract. In addition to annual professional service, keep the area around the burner clean. Dust can prevent the blower from working-, dirt can cause the burner to fail. Periodically vacuum the openings that admit air to the burner's blower with a crevice tool. Do not sweep dirt under the burner Increasing efficiency. If the boiler or furnace has an observation window, look at the flame in the combustion chamber; it should be bright yellow, and it should produce no smoke. If the flame is dark orange or sooty, or if you can see smoke exiting from the chimney outside, have your service person adjust the burner. In some cases, the burner installed in a home was incorrectly sized, creating more heat than needed. Adding insulation to your house reduces its heating needs, making an oversized burner less efficient. One remedy is to have the burner nozzle replaced with one that has a smaller opening. (Tightening the house may also decrease oxygen for combustion. If a burner doesn't run at 75 percent efficiency or better after a tune-up and a nozzle replacement, it's a candidate for replacement. Replacing the old burner with a flame-retention model, although expensive initially, will pay for itself within a few years.

 LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR STOVE

All the leading products have beautifully engineered features designed to make life easier. The more you read about them, the more entranced you get. Soon you want a stove with every feature on the list. You the homemaker (whether male or female), have to be pleased. This is an appliance that you are going to use daily. Be practical, but don't scrimp. If you don't get what you want, you'll be an unhappy camper for the next fifteen years and the entire family will suffer.
One feature you have to look out for is size. It may be that stoves are getting to be like men's ties. Back in the 1950's the stoves were 40" wide. In the 1960's the manufacturers stopped making that width and started making stoves 30" wide. Thousands of Americans had to remake their kitchen counters or be stuck with 10" of dead space next to their stove. Now, the scuttle butt is that the manufacturers are going back to 10" widths. This should make the kitchen remodel very happy but it is going to be very expensive for the rest of us.
Here area few drawbacks to some of the most popular features:
• Smooth top stoves look beautiful. But you really have to be a cleaning fanatic to live happily. Everything makes a mess.
• Burners that turn up, instead of pull out for cleaning can be a problem. The burners that just turn up for cleaning are soldered. If a soldered burner burns out, you have a big service charge. If pull out burner burns out, you pull it out, go to the store, and replace it.
An electric stove creates a great deal of heat. Keep it close to the sink and away from the refrigerator.
You'll find that choosing a stove today is a difficult proposition.
Here are some "musts."
Do make sure you have the stove plugged into a 250 watt power supply. Insufficient power is a prime cause of failure.
Do make sure the stove is perfectly level.
Do make sure the cupboards over the stove do not have heavy items in them. They can fall out and damage the stove top.
Do make certain that the stove is anchored in place so that it cannot tip forward and cause a serious accident.
Do make certain that a fire extinguisher is located close to the stove. A stove top or oven fire can easily spread and cause a serious house fire or grave injury.
Do make certain that you pull the plug before you attempt do-it-yourself repairs.

Burner pans are made to reflect heat upward. Any stain decreases the efficiency of your burner. When something boils over the pan should be cleaned as soon as the burner is cool enough to allow you to remove the burner pan. To clean, use water and an organic cleaner like Simple Green’s. If that doesn't work, try soaking the pan and try again. If the stain", are still "hanging tough", use a bar of Bon Ami". Never use an abrasive, like scouring powder or a scouring pad. If the burner pans get so stained that they no longer look good or reflect properly, buy genuine replacement burner pans from your appliance store or service department. The cheap, universal replacement pans you can get at hardware stores are too light to hold their brightness for long.

Never use aluminum foil to act as a reflective surface on top of an old burner pan. The foil is too light to work adequately, will become loose and can cause a very nasty electric short It is a very good idea to look at the repair manual for the appliance, while you are shopping for the appliance repair Manual should be very clear, with lots of photos. The terrors should look easy. The easier the repairs are, the more consumers driven the manufacturer is. Buy the repair manual at the same time you buy the appliance.

WARNING: Do not take chances with your life. After you have decided what the problem is, pull the main power plug before you attempt to make repairs.

Microwave Repair Tips

  1. Do not use aluminum foil or anything with metal on it. (unless your microwave specifically allows it. Check your owner's manual)
  2. A fuse is a safety device that will cut off the flow of an electrical current if the current becomes too strong. This action protects your microwave. The first thing you should check if your microwave isn't working is its fuse. The appliance will not work again until the fuse is replaced.
  3. Check the turntable guide to make sure it is lined up properly and that there is no debris caught in it. You may need to re-align or clean your turntable guide.
  4. A turntable tray not sitting on its bushing correctly may not be the only reason why it is not turning properly. Your turntable tray may be dirty and may not have a clear path for rotation. Inspect your tray for caked on food particles. Also examine below the tray for any food or other debris that may be hindering its movement. If you discover any objects hindering the tray's movement, thoroughly clean both the tray and below the tray

OVEN BAKING PROBLEMS

All baking problems fall into two general classifications: mechanical installation and adjustment of the oven, and proper use of the oven. All parts on the oven must be in working order if it is to function properly; the thermostat must be in adjustment, the oven vent must be open, the oven door sealing at the top must have the proper 1/32" clearance at the bottom, and the oven must be level at the oven racks. (An oven must be level to obtain the best baking results. It is a mistake to assume that the kitchen floor is level or to level the oven to the top units. Always level the oven to the oven racks, as previously described.) A cake baked on an oven rack that tilts will not be of uniform thickness. The batter flows to the low end of the pan and makes one end of the cake too thick. Also, the flow of heat under the pan toward the high end browns the thin part of the cake too quickly.
Proper Use of the Oven for Baking. The homeowner should be familiar with all parts of the oven and their correct uses. Each part has its proper function. Any cake will be affected by a failure to move the thermostat selector lever to bake after preheating the oven. Not all thermostats have automatic preheat. On some ovens the selector lever must be switched manually from preheat to bake.
Utensils and Their Properties. One of the most important factors in baking is the use of suitable baking pans and tins.
Standard Pan. The cake shown in was baked in a standard medium-weight aluminum pan. The sides of the pan are straight and highly polished, and the bottom has a slight dull sand-blast finish. The weight and finish of the material in this type of pan provide for the desired degree of bottom browning. Cake recipes are usually prepared for aluminum pans. If an oven type of glass utensil, or darkened tin, or enameled pan is used for cakes, the oven temperature should be set 25° lower than called for in the recipe. The degree of browning varies with the capacity of the different pan materials to absorb and reflect radiant heat.
Standard Baking Sheets. The biscuits shown in were baked on a standard baking sheet. Every other row has been turned over to compare the top and bottom browning. The sheet should be 4" smaller than the oven to allow about 2" all around for the circulation of heat. An oversized baking sheet will result in poor top browning and over browning of the bottom. The oversized sheet restricts the flow of heat to the top of the oven. The best results are obtained when a flat baking sheet of medium-weight aluminum is properly centered in the oven. Biscuits or cookies should not be baked in a utensil with sides. If the utensil has sides, use it upside down. Bake only one sheet of cookies or biscuits at a time. Atonement of Food in the Oven. Food should be placed in the oven in a central location so that the heat can circulate freely around the pans. The pans should not touch each other, or the sides, or the back of the oven. Shows four cake pans arovend in the oven in such a way as to permit the free circulation of heat. Rack positions 3 and 7, or 4 and 7, give convenient spacing between oven racks. All rack positions are counted from the bottom. Place two cake pans in the oven on one rack either on the fourth or fifth rack position or slightly below the center of the oven. If the oven has six rack positions, use 2 or 3. For biscuits and cookies, place the baking sheet on the fourth or fifth rack position. For complete oven meals, foods which will cook at approximately the same temperature and require the same cooking time should be selected. The foods should be placed to allow for the free circulation of heat.

Refrigerator Repair Tips

  1. If your refrigerator isn’t cooling properly you could try checking the condenser coils. There are condenser coils on the rear of the box, make sure the box is several inches from the wall and that nothing is on top at the rear, blocking the heat from coming off the coils.
  2. If your freezer is too warm it may be because of a defective defrost thermostat. Test your defrost thermostat to determine if it has malfunctioned. If it has, you will need to replace it.
  3. If you are having problems with your ice maker, the water inlet valve may be filled with ice. If it is, simply thaw the water tube with a hair dryer to remove the blockage. Be careful to not melt any plastic parts with the blow dryer.

GOOD TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR REFRIGERATOR

Occasionally you will run into an unusual problem that requires you to scratch your head a bit. If you know the basic systems and what they do, you can usually figure out what's going on. Following is a smattering of some of the more unusual or flakey things that I've run into as a home service technician:
If your fridge is warm, always check your controls. First. Many a time, I was called to someone's house on a "warm fridge" complaint, only to find that the controls had been magically shut off.

When the little darlings of the household were queried about this divine occurrence, you could literally see the halo forming around their heads. "Did you touch the refrigerator?" Mom would ask. Standing beside the refrigerator that hadn't moved an inch in all of his (or her) six years, the child would inevitably reply: "What refrigerator, Mom?" I'm sure that my soul will burn in hell, but it was no moral dilemma for me to charge the 30 dollar service fee in such cases. One fellow whose unit I "fixed" in this way lost well over 500 dollars worth of meats from his packed-full deep freezer. Plain able occurrence of the controls getting shut off. This was a single lady of about 55 with no kids, who had owned the refrigerator for over 25 years. I'm not trying to harp on kids; it's just that as a home service tech, I've seen a lot of money wasted on unnecessary (and expensive) service calls with suspicious circumstances in homes with kids. Do yourself a favor; check the controls first. Set them on mid-range settings. You might save yourself a lots time, trouble, and expense.

One of the more perplexing problems that I ran into was a young couple (with 4 or 5 kids) that had a warm fridge. Upon investigation, I discovered that the Freon tubes leading to and from the evaporator (above it on their side-by-side fridge) were heavily frosted with clear, solid ice. Also, the wires leading to the evaporator fan and defrost heater were heavily caked with solid ice. I didn't understand that frost pattern at all, and evidently I was rushed that day, so I replaced the defrost timer and melted the ice, fully figuring I'd get a callback. Sure enough, five days later, they called me back. Same problem, same weird frost pattern.

Plastic inner door liner (or shelving) from drifting around if you have to re-align it, it can be a long, frustrating, trial-and-error process. The new seal will fit in the same way as the old one came out. You are much more likely to have a door alignment problem or warping. There's not much you can do with a badly warped door except to try to warp it back into shape, or replace it.
With the door closed, measure the gap around it; top and bottom, left and right. Check if the door edges and refrigerator edges are parallel. If the measurements indicate that the door is badly out of alignment, re-align it be loosening the hinges slightly (one hinge at a time) and shifting the door around. It may take a few tries to get it aligned properly.
Remove anything obstructing the seals. Sometimes the kick plate will get in the way. If it's metal, you may be able to bend it slightly to solve your problem.

If you have to move your fridge for any reason, make sure that you keep it upright. If you turn it on its side there's a strong probability that the compressor oil will run out of the compressor and into the condenser, and when you start the fridge, the compressor will burn out within a few hours or even minutes, for lack of lubrication- I've heard of people getting lucky and getting away with it; maybe they just happened to lay it on the "lucky" side of the fridge. It's not worth the risk. If your fridge has been laid on its side, stand it upright again but don't plug it in for day or two. Just hope that either the oil drains back into the compressor or that it didn't run out in the first place.

DISHWASHER TIPS

You would not believe how important dishwashers are to the American family. I see the proof every working day. A housewife
working housewife be very understanding when a part to the washing machine has to be ordered. She may even be compassionate when the oven is out of action for a week. But let a part be back ordered on a dishwasher and she will call me daily.
And not just the lady of the house. Husbands hound me, and even singles show a single minded devotion to dishwasher repair when that appliance breaks down.
I)Ishwashersaw also one oI Ow hip, topics of conversation at Illy seminars and oil lily radio shows. I believe that there arc Olive reasons for this:
Once an automatic dishwasher enters our lives it saves us so Much time and drudgery that it becomes absolutely essential.
2. We use it every day so we see the results of the dishwashers use every day.
3. To be polite, 95% of all users, use it wrong so most of us always think there is something wrong.
If all you were to get out of this book would be to learn how to use a dishwasher properly, it would be a bargain. To see how much of an impact dishwashers have on your life, get Yourself a nice cool glass of water, then sit down, relax, read and learn.
Before you fill your glass, hold it up to a light bulb and look at all the scratches. Those scratches are called etching. They are caused by improper dishwasher use.
Getting the proper dishwasher, and making certain that it is installed properly, are also very important factors in your overall happiness with the product.
Unfortunately, given their importance, if there is any product in the major home appliance industry that exemplifies a junk product, it is the American dishwasher. We in the service industry have looked oil its manufacturers have put their' 11,111le oilappliances which should never have been allowed into the country.
The problem is plain old fashioned greed. Dishwashers are very big business and some manufacturers will stoop to almost anything to gain the competitive price edge, even at the cost of cheapening their products.
This is not a blanket statement. All teenagers are, not beer swill¬ing, pot smoking what-evers. All American dishwashers are not junk. There are some fine old American names out there that make dishwashers that are among the best in the world. Dishwashers that should run for twenty years and never give a problem.
Once again, it is a case of you get what you pay for. If the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.

MAINTENANCE:

Daily:
Inspect the dishwasher after each use. If you see sediment accumulating around filters or at the bottom of the dishwasher, clean thoroughly.

Monthly:
Lift up the bottom spray arm (it may just lift Off) and inspect to see that no sediment is plugging up the holes on the spray arm Inecliallistil.
Give your dishwasher a refreshing drink of Tang is every month or two. I, personally, have never even tasted Tang@. Although a number of astronauts swear by t he stuff. I do know that it will give your dishwasher a quick energy boost.
Many customers who have come to me complaining about leaky dishwasher doors have solved the problem with Tang. The secret is that Tang in your dishwasher will clear away all the undissolved soap which coats the impellers, seals and surfaces of everything. Once the seals get coated, they start to harden. As soon as they harden they become unable to seal the water in. The technique is to dump an entire one pint jar of Tang into the bottom of an empty dishwasher. Preheat the water as if it were a regular wash. Then, run the dishwasher through its regular cycle.
One warning: If you have leaky door seals, check to see if the Tang discolors your flooring before trying this. If you have kitchen carpeting the Tang may leave a very hard to remove stain.

When you leave on a trip:
The motor seal on your dishwasher should be kept moist at all times. If the seals dry up on the motor shaft, water can leak down the shaft and ruin the motor, causing a very expensive repair.
If you are going to be gone for more than one month, have someone you trust go to your house and pour two quarts of water into your dishwasher every thirty days.

LEARN ABOUT YOUR DRYER

The dryer is usually the "companion" of the washing machine.
Therefore, unless you are purchasing a replacement, it is very probable that you are going to have the same brand of dryer as washer.

DRYER MAINTENANCE: Monthly:

Wash the lint screen out with mild soap and water. Just for the heck of it, take your lint screen over to the sink, hold it flat and pour a hand full of water over the mesh.
See how slowly it goes through the mesh? If it's really bad, the water may not be able to penetrate at all. This is caused by the build up of detergent and fabric softener on the mesh fibers.
If water can't get through, air can't get through. To work at maximum efficiency, the air going through the dryer must exit at a factory specified rate. Build up on the lint filter will slow down that rate and cause big service problems, in addition to increasing the fire hazard.

DRYER MAINTENANCE: Yearly

1. Once a year you need to give the inside of your dryer a complete cleaning. To do this you will have to pull the plug on the dryer and remove either the front or the rear panel of the dryer. Then take a refrigerator brush and the vacuum cleaner tool hose and suck up all the lint that has accumulated around the inside of the machine. You will be amazed at how much lint there is.
Take special care to clean around the ends of the motor. Making these areas lint free is vital to the longevity of the dryer motor. When air cannot go through the motor, the motor will overheat and cause premature failure.
You are going to have to get down on the floor to do this job properly. Get a flashlight and shine the light into all the nooks and crannies of the drier. Where-ever there is a hint of lint dust, get rid of it.
The screams that you hear are from the service industry. If you and the other appliance owners would just follow this one piece of advice and clean all the dust out of your machines, you would cost the service industry hundreds of millions of dollars in service charges.
2. Exterior dryer vent flaps often wedge open. This can cause trouble three ways: #1 it allows heat to escape from your house during the winter. #2 it makes your dryer extra cold during the winter and adds to drying time. #3 it allows little critters to climb into the vent line. I have actually had to remove birds nests complete with little birds from dryer vents. Once a year, go to the outside of your house and check to see that the dryer vent is moving smoothly. Clean it thoroughly. Make sure that the vent flap hinges are moving freely.
3. Take the vent line off and give it a thorough cleaning. You give thorough to get all the lint that has attached itself to the inner surface of the vent out of the vent line. Take the rigid vent line outside; take the elbows off either end. Run your garden hose through the vent line. Clean it out thoroughly.

Washing Machine Repair Tips

  1. Never overload the machine
  2. If your washing machine won’t spin or agitate Make sure that the selector switch on the control panel, if there is one, is set properly. Check to ensure the button has been pressed all the way in. If it is, then try testing the switch. If it has failed, it will need to be replaced.
  3. When a washing machine allows hot water to enter the tub depends greatly upon its make and model. Some washing machines direct hot water only during certain cycles. Others allow hot and cold water to enter in an alternating fashion in order to equalize the water temperature. The first thing you should do is refer to your owner's manual to ensure that your washer is not operating as it should. If you discover that it isn't, investigate the machine's water inlet valve. It could be defective, and causing your problem.

THINGS GOOD TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR WASHER

1. What is the life expectancy of this machine? Anything less than fourteen years is unacceptable. Ask to see the life expectancy claim in print.
2. What is the model year of this machine? Many high volume stores are able to sell at low prices because they are selling outdated equipment. There is nothing wrong with buying last year's equipment (it may even be a better machine), but you should know what you are getting.
3. What is the load size? Is it the proper size for your family's needs?
4. What is the rinsing capability? How thorough a job does it do getting the soap out of the clothing?
What is the water usage? Water costs. The more used the more expensive.

If you buy a washer and dryer at the same time, the probability is that you will have to replace the washer before the dryer- When the time comes to replace the washer, you will most probably not be able to match the dryer color. You will eventually be stuck with either a discordant color scheme, or having to throw out a perfectly good dryer match. Good dryer, so that washer and dryer Manufacturers change colors every few years. Many people believe that this is just so that consumers can't find a replacement and have to buy two new appliances, instead of one. This probably isn't chicanery on the part of the companies.

Since washing machines stay pretty much the same (we haven't had a major new advancement in twenty years), color is used as a major element to create excitement in new model. Design teams keep changing the least popular colors hoping for one that will make a major sales impact. Naturally, if fate has its way, the color you need will be the one they canceled.
Bear in mind that the fancier the machine is, the more it will cost. Simplicity is a virtue. If you have an average size family, you probably need the following features:

Three temperature settings: hot, medium and cold. Cold water is good for rinsing. Hot is best for washing- Medium may be needed for delicate fabrics. Never wash with cold water the Is that delicate, use a product like Woolitc and hand wash.
Two speed settings: Regular and delicate. One or two wash size settings: Most families would be better off- if you just used the large load setting, but if you only have a couple of pieces a small or medium load setting is nice. If there is only one or two of you in the family, why do you need more than a regular size (cheaper) tub?
Any other settings are of little practical value.
Manual buttons and dials. Electronic touch pad controls look nice and make you feel like you're in the 21st Century. They are very expensive to replace and do not have a track record for long lasting reliability. I have had a lot of customers who, once they found out how expensive the replacement electronic controls were, preferred to buy a brand new washing machine with traditional controls.
Don't buy a larger tub than necessary. There are only two different tub sizes, regular and extra large. The extra large tub only cleans two pounds more clothing and can cost you a lot more money. When you buy a washer with a large tub you usually get stuck with a lot of added features.
Energy Efficiency. With a washing machine, you are the prime factor in determining the energy efficiency. That's because the efficiency stems from the temperature and the amount of water you use. The hot water tank is the prime user of energy. Use a lot of hot water when you wash the clothes and the bill goes up, the energy efficiency goes down. Use small amounts of cold water anti efficiency sky rockets. The only problem with this is that generally speaking, the hotter the water, the better the cleaning action. As a general rule, the more water you use, the better the rinse. Only you can decide whether energy efficiency or cleaning power is more important.
